ASS to SRT converter

Choose or paste an .ass or .ssa file and get an .srt that any player or editor reads. It runs in your browser, so your file is never uploaded.

Letters look wrong?

Old subtitle files are often saved in a regional code page instead of UTF-8. The file you download is always UTF-8.

How to convert ASS to SRT

    1. Choose your .ass or .ssa file, drop it on the box, or paste its text.
    2. Check the result: lines are sorted by time, and anything left out is counted.
    3. Click Download .srt.

What is kept and what is not

Every Dialogue line becomes a subtitle with its start and end time. \N line breaks, italic {\i1}, bold {\b1} and underline {\u1} are kept as SRT tags, and a top position {\an8} stays as {\an8}, which most players read. Fonts, colours, outlines, movement and karaoke effects have no SRT form and are removed. Comment lines and vector drawings ({\p1}) are not text and are left out.

    Common questions

Why are my lines in a different order?

ASS files are often ordered by layer or style, not by time. SRT players expect subtitles in time order, so they are sorted by start time.

    Is my file uploaded?

No. The conversion is JavaScript running in this page.

Does it read Japanese, Chinese or Arabic subtitles?

Yes. UTF-8 and UTF-16 files are read directly; older Shift JIS, GBK or Big5 files can be chosen under "Letters look wrong?". The SRT is saved as UTF-8.

Can I keep the styled look?

Not in SRT. For styled, animated captions burned into a short video, try Subtylo.
