Extract audio from a video
Choose an MP4 or MOV video and download its sound as an M4A file. The sound is copied, not re-encoded, and the video is never uploaded.
It works in this page. The video is not uploaded, so a large file takes no longer than a small one to send: nothing is sent.

Make subtitles from a videoHow to get the audio from a video
- Choose your video or drop it on the box. Phone videos (iPhone .mov, Android .mp4) work as they are.
- The page copies the sound out of the video, usually in a few seconds.
- Listen to it, then click Download .m4a.
Why M4A and not MP3
Phone and camera videos store their sound as AAC. An M4A file is that same AAC sound in an audio file, so the tool copies the sound data as it is: no quality is lost and nothing has to be encoded. Turning it into MP3 would mean encoding it again, which loses a little quality and makes no smaller file. M4A plays on iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac.
Common questions
Is my video uploaded?
No. The page reads only the sound from your video, in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.
Which formats work?
MP4, MOV and M4V with AAC sound, which is what iPhones, Android phones, cameras, screen recorders and video editors save. WebM videos, videos with other sound formats and fragmented MP4 (some live-stream recordings) are not supported yet; the page tells you if your file is one of them.
Is there a size or length limit?
No set limit. The M4A is as large as the sound inside the video, which is a small part of the video's size. The sound is held in your browser's memory while it is copied, so very long videos are better done on a computer than on a phone.
I need the words, not the sound.
Textylo turns a video or its audio into text with timestamps (TXT, Word, SRT or VTT), free up to 30 minutes.
Can I also remove the sound from the video?
Yes: Remove audio from video gives you the same video without sound, in its original quality.
